A good war-date Union surgeon's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Asst. Surgeon William C. Towle 12th Maine Vols., Camp Parapet, [Carrolton, La.], Jan. 13, 1864, to his wife, in part: "…I heard last night through an intelligent contraband that our expedition…met the enemy and had quite a fight…however I do not place much reliance in…I have been interrupted no less than a dozen times. There is a politic now in the room with some new complaint hoping to get his discharge. We have but few of these kind of men in tis Regt and I wish they were less…I have ordered a big blister to his back and that will quiet him for sometime. He is not gone out. Our men are reenlisting and I am the examining surgeon. It is a good time to get rid of the sculy ones. We have a good many men in our regt. enlisted in New Orleans. They are Irish, French and German. Capt. [Seth C.] Farrington told me…that he heard the quota of Fryburg was full so there would be no draft…I can hardly believe it…I don't know of any other way that a man could make so much money in the same length of time. Letting alone his ideas of patriotism which…ought to be sufficient inducement to many…W. C. Towle." The original transmittal cover is included. A bit light, but readable, else VG
