A good war-date Union surgeon's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Asst. Surgeon William C. Towle 12th Maine Vols., Camp Parapet, [Carrolton, La.], Feb. 11, 1864, to his sister, in part: "…I have had plenty to do lately being the only surgeon here…am now in charge of the hospital and have also 8 companies to look after, two of them belong to the 2nd La White Regt. Surgeon's call is at half past six in the morning and at nine I visit the patients in [the] hospital and prescribe for then day…I visit them again in the evening. I have now…16 in hospital…I expect to have more as the warm weather comes…our men are reenlisting. More than half of the regt have already signed the papers…there is another call for 500,00 more. Father Abraham is bound to have men enough…he is right. Next summer ought to wind up this rebellion…I witnessed a grand display of cavalry…the occasion was the presentation of a battle flag by the Mass. ladies…the presentation was made by Gen. Banks little daughter, a beautiful child…not more than thirteen…she made a very pretty and appropriate speech…while her father stood behind her under the statue of Henry Clay. Gen. Banks os a noble looking man and is liked in this department. It was an imposing spectacle to witness that long line of veteran cavalry with many of their battle flags ridden & torn in their many engagements with the enemy…Capt. Bradley…is in command of the Battalion…he told me that all of his men had reenlisted. This does not look as though the men were tired of fighting…W. C. Towle" The original transmittal cover is included. The original transmittal cover is included. A bit light, but readable, else VG
