A good war-date Union surgeon's letter, 1p. 8vo., written by Asst. Surgeon William C. Towle 12th Maine Vols., Winchester, [Va.], Sept. 21, 1864, to his wife, in full: "You have probably seen the account of our recent fighting. I can hardly tell you that I am well & am having all I can do. I have now over 150 wounded under my charge. Our regt has been horribly cut up. I have taken care of over 50 wounded of our Regt. Dr. [Eldridge A.] Thompson is under arrest for being drunk. What a disgrace to himself & service. I don't know where he is now. I have the charge of the regt. I am standing it remarkably well. I did not think I could endure so much but I must close and go to work. I have had all kinds of amputations to perform. Will write again as soon as I have time. In haste yours ever, Wm. C. Towle." The original transmittal cover is included. Minor toning, else VG.
