A good war-date Union surgeon's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Asst. Surgeon William C. Towle 12th Maine Veteran Battalion, Camp Russell, [Cedar Creek, Va.], Dec. 8, 1864, to his wife, in part: "…we had a sad accident o the way. One of our men was accidentally shot dead by the discharge of a musket in the hands of another. I felt very bad for I would rather see a dozen fall in battle then have one killed in such a way. We had no trouble with the guerrillas nor saw anything that looked like them tho' there are many small squads of them between here and Martinsburg…the men had orders to rebuild their huts which they are now doing. They build the sides and ends with logs and cover the top with tents. The walls will be six feet high and the length [of] twelve feet…with a good fire place with chimney…each hut will accommodate six men…the Col. and myself are going to have our foundation laid long enough for two wall tents to cover. One for an office and receiving room and the other for our private sleeping room…most of the Sixth Corps have left for Harpers Ferry…they are either going to Grant or Sherman…the 23rd Me. is assigned to 30th and…the 15th…assigned to the 29th. The term of service of the 14th expires this month and what is left of them may…join us. I don't think that I shall remain as Asst. Sug. and have another Surg. over me…I have two or three men detailed form the Regt most of the time…Wm. C. Towle." The original transmittal cover is included. Minor toning, else VG.
