A good war-date Union surgeon's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Asst. Surgeon William C. Towle 12th Maine Veteran Battalion, "Headquarters 12th Me. Vet. Batt.", Savannah, Ga., Feb. 26, 1865, to his wife, in part: "…I am living well. I pay a colored woman three dollars a month to cook for me. I have a man to take care of my horse and another to wait upon me, black my boots, bring my mails…and make himself generally useful. I am afraid that I shall get out of the notion of waiting upon myself…it is natural now to me to call out for the hotelier or orderly if I want anything, but this is army life and I have enough to do to attend to my own…business…we are getting along nicely. Our men are doing police duty and are highly spoken of by all. Oh. dear, I dread to see new recruits coming. I do hope that they will be…a different class than those that we have had before. The probability is that the most of them will be 'Bounty jumpers' and that class must not expect much sympathy from me for I detest them above all…I enjoy many pleasant hours with my feet over the fire place higher than my head [draws a profile of a kepi wearing soldier smoking a pipe here] this completes the picture…there is two more days and six months pay will be due. Uncle Sam should be more prompt…my sick list is quite small at present in the Regts. Colored people are continually calling for something. There are agents here recruiting negroes to fill the home quota, better…enlist themselves…I wish they were obliged too…I have no small pox patients to visit…there is considerable of it in the city. A man by the name of Martin had it in our Regt. He is a nephew of Sam Osgood's wife and is exactly like her-for all the world…Wm. C. Towle." The original transmittal cover is included. Minor toning, else VG.
