War-date Union soldier’s Autograph Letter Signed by Wilcox, 4pp. quarto, On Picket in Georgia, February 3, 1865, and reads with good content “...We are far enough out on picket to bring us some four and a half miles into Georgia permitting me thereby to date my letters one state farther south than when in camp, the outside of which is just on the line between the two states Georgia and Tennessee. About the only trouble in this section at present is from the raids of a notorious guerilla and his confrere one Weatherspoon who between them have a gang of outlaws numbering some two or three hundred and go round plundering and hanging Union people. As yet they have eluded all efforts to catch them or force them to fight, that evidently not beign their trade. Yesterday Union citizens reported that they were in about fifteen miles from here and were intending to make a dash on us, drive in the picket and be off again and last night we expected them, but they didnt come ...I asked the commandants this morning to let me take a party of fifty men and go on a scout after Mr. G. and he ast first consented but finally changed his mind thinking it would not pay....” Fine condition.
