McCRARY, George Washington (1835-1890) was a four-term Republican Congressman from Iowa's 1st congressional district, a United States Secretary of War in the cabinet of President Rutherford B. Hayes, and a federal circuit judge. Document Signed, “Geo. McCrary, Secretary of War” on 3-page manuscript document, War Department, Washington City, September 16th, 1879, agreeing to forward a copy of the proceeding of investigation of Union Ct. Major Cyrus Clark for misuse of public funds when he was Paymaster in Franklin Texas, April 6, 1865. VG.
