Signed General George McClellan CDV, with rank, that was to be sold at the New York Sanitary Fair in April 1864 to raise money for sick and wounded Union soldiers, Anthony/Brady back imprint. The paper has two slits for the CDV to be inserted. There must have been a string through the top of the mount at one time to secure the top to the page, but that is missing. McClellan's signature and rank are in bold dark ink. President Lincoln relieved General McCellan of his duties in 1862 for not being an "Aggressive" leader. Two years later McClellan became the Democratic nominee for President, running against his old boss, Abraham Lincoln. There was no love lost between these two men. The CDV was to be sold in April 1864, right at the beginning of the 1864 election cycle. Maybe "Little Mac" was looking to secure the soldiers vote by offering his signed image at the fair. Non the less, an unusual and fantastic presentation piece.
