Rare photograph of a "Buckingham Print" Ford's Theater playbill published by John E. Buckingham, Ford's Theater doorman. Buckingham was the doorman the night John Wilkes Booth assassinated President Lincoln. Booth entered the theater several times that evening prior to the assassination, and at one point asked Buckingham if he wanted to accompany him to the bar next door for a drink, which Buckingham declined. After the assassination Buckingham made a "second generation" print of the original playbill for that evening. The print, known as the "Buckingham Print" is an exact duplicate of the original. This photograph, done in 1890, is a photograph of one of those playbills. It has Buckingham’s copyright on the bottom front mount, and on the verso it reads "I hereby certify that I was the Door-Keeper on the evening of the assassination of President Lincoln, and that this is a fac-Simile of the Programme. John E. Buckingham". The piece measures 3 -/8" x 1- 3/8", has a several light creases, else fine. We know of only a handful of these images of the playbill.
