These two silk flag remnants are from the 36 star flag hanging in one of the cars of the Lincoln funeral train. The tattered red fragment is approximately 3.5” by 1.25”; the tan rectangular fragment, sharp cut streaks across center, is 4” x 1.5”. Mounted on a 7.5” x 10.5” card with a 5.75” x 4.25” photo image. In apparent fine condition. Triple-matted and placed in an ornate frame. Overall size, 14” x 17”. The flag was one of flags made locally for the visit, and after the train departed, the flags were given to prominent Indianapolis families. The card is titled: “Abraham Lincoln Funeral Flag.” Captioned: “This silk flag remnant is from a 36 star flag that adorned the interior of one of the funeral railroad cars in the Lincoln funeral trail for the duration of its stop at Indianapolis, Indiana on April 30th, 1865. The train arrived in Indianapolis at 7 a.m. that morning and departed at midnight. The copy photo above shows Lincoln’s car and the officer’s car in the funeral train as it appeared on the journey from Washington, D.C. to Springfield, Illinois in April 1865.”
