Group of 67 letters, cards and thank you notes to J.W. “Bill” Golding and his wife in Perry, Ohio, during World War 2. Mr. Golding was a captain in the Army during World War I (see previous lot). Most of the letters appear to be from young men in World War II who knew Dr. Golding (a dentist) through church, community or were friends of his children. The Golding apparently sent gifts to these young men, who in turn wrote notes of thanks and filled in the “folks back home” with their military training and trips to big cities before or after shipping out. Many from Goldings’ nephew, Kirk, and family friend Luis Rago. They speak of the schools they are attending to prepare for their service, travel, time on KP or working in the hospitals, dental matters and, as one correspondent notes, “general flunkey work.” Not much in the way of “war scene” news, but a flavor of the times.
