Two bound volumes of Harper’s New Monthly Magazine from June-Nov., 1858 and from Dec. 1858-May 1859. Covers loose or missing but pages in great shape. Each volume in excess of 800 pages with 801 total illustrations in both volumes. Great amount of reading material covering articles of historical and national interest. Topics cover such things as Ethan Allen, journeys through the land of Aztecs, death of Louis XVI, affairs in Utah and Kansas, yellow fever, proceedings in Congress and debate of the slave trade as the U.S. rushes full speed toward Civil War, flight of the Mormons, presidential proclamations, gold strikes at Pike’s Peak, the Atlantic Telegraph, capture of slavers, Indian hostilities, first overland mail from California to St. Louis, a New York detective story, ladies’ fashions, literary criticism (including reviews of the “Courtship of Miles Standish,” “Sanger’s History of Prostitution” and “Poe’s Poetical Works”), Lynch Law, and much more. These are wonderful time capsules filled with historic content and wonderful stories both real and imagined about heroes and goats of the times.
