Wonderful and historic edition of The Gentlemen’s Magazine” of January 1776, printed in London. Contains an abstract of the British act to prohibit all trade with the American colonies and “remarks of the American Congress on the King’s Proclamation of August 23, 1775.” (Though Bunker Hill is not specifically cited in this report, the Proclamation of Rebellion, officially titled, “A Proclamation for Suppressing Rebellion and Sedition,” was the response of George III of Great Britain to the news of the Battle of Bunker Hill at the outset of the American Revolutionary War. Issued August 23, 1775, it declared elements of the American colonies in a state of "open and avowed rebellion." It ordered officials of the British Empire "to use their utmost endeavours to withstand and suppress such rebellion." The Proclamation also encouraged subjects throughout the Empire, including those in Great Britain, to report anyone carrying on "traitorous correspondence" with the rebels so that they could be punished.”) The Congress answers point by point that it owes no allegiance to Parliament, questions accusations of “open rebellion”, and avows that force will be met with force. “The essential difference between our cause and that of our enemies might justify a severer punishment: the law of retaliation will unquestionably warrant one equally severe.” Revolutionary beliefs! Also, an “abstract of the Captures Act and the counter act of the Americans for fitting out privateers.” These texts take up about eight full pages of this 48-page magazine. Good shape, printed on laid paper, removed from volume. Truly historic content of our American Revolution.
