ELLSWORTH, Oliver (1745-1807) was an American lawyer, judge, politician, and diplomat. He was a drafter of the United States Constitution, a United States Senator from Connecticut, and the third Chief Justice of the United States. War-date Document Signed by Oliver Ellsworth, Ezekiel Williams, Thomas Seymour, 1pp. quarto, Hartford, Connecticut, March 1, 1777. amd reads in part: “...Please pay to Benjamin Payne Esqr Thirty Three Pounds Nineteen Shillings & Two Pence for that sum by him expended for the Prisoners of War stationed in this State for their board & transportation...” Fine condition.
