War-date Autograph Document Signed “Seth Washburn” May 15, 1782, and reads this may certify that the town of Shrewsbury have raised and marched all there men to fill up the army for three years and ought to be discharged...” Fine condition. Seth Washburn was born in 1723 at Bridgewater, Massachusetts to Joseph and Hannah (Johnson) Washburn. Interestingly, Joseph Washburn's gg-grandfather was Francis Cooke, who arrived on the Mayflower. Joseph Washburn's mother, Hannah Latham, was a grandchild of Mary Chilton, who also arrived on the Mayflower with her parents. These ancestry lineages are well researched by the Mayflower societies, which can be readily found through any easy internet search. By 1754, Seth Washburn was enlisted in the military as a Lieutenant and fought in the French and Indian Wars for England. In 1770, in the town of Leicester, Massachusetts, a company of Minute Men were mustered into service selecting William Henshaw as Captain and Seth Washburn as Lieutenant. Their unit would be under the command of Col. Artemus Ward. Lieutenant Washburn, along with many men from across the soon to be new United States of America, were now at war against the British. By 1775, Seth Washburn had been promoted to the rank of Captain.
