A great Southern pro-Know Nothing party, 2pp. 4to., letter written by a certain "John", [Northern Virginia], Dec. 20, 1854, to Andrew Alonzo, reading, in part: "…I am most pleased to hear the "Know nothings" are making such rapid strides in the ranks of…Jefferson County, [soon to be West Virginia]. God speed the party. As for myself, I am one in principle…my motto is America must & shall rule America now and forever. It is your duty as a father and a native American to rally around the flag of your country so that our political & religious liberties may be handed down to our sons in their primitive purity, unfettered by any foreign [crossed out], hierarchy, prince or potentate from without & the many "isms" from within both North and South…no Native American will be slow in uniting himself with them unless he or they are political demagogues…to such the party is hostile and their fate is sealed both Whigs & democrats…trembling from high places will be seen…[by] all who are not of that mysterious number. I expect to see a meeting this week…let 1855 see you out of the party of our native land. H. A. Wise [future Civil War Virginia Governor Henry A. Wise] is a doomed man-his days were numbered at Staunton-blind leaders…they will all fall in[to] the pit together…John." VG
