COOPER, Samuel (1798-1876) was a career United States Army staff officer, serving during the Second Seminole War and the Mexican-American War. Although little-known today, Cooper was also the highest-ranking Confederate general during the American Civil War. After the conflict, he remained in Virginia as a farmer. War-date Letter Signed “S. Cooper” 1pp. quarto, Adjutant & Inspector General’s Office, Montgomery, May 6, 1861, being Special Orders No. 44, assigning 2nd Lieut. Edward Willis to the command of John Mullins. Fine condition.
