LETCHER, John (1813-1884) was an American lawyer, journalist, and politician. He served as a Representative in the United States Congress, was the 34th Governor of Virginia during the American Civil War, and later served in the Virginia General Assembly. He was also active on the Board of Visitors of Virginia Military Institute. War-date Autograph Letter Signed “John Letcher” 1pp. quarto, Executive Deparment, November 23, 1861, addressed to “Gentleman of the Convention” and reads in part : “ Certain resolutions passed by you, on the 29th day of June last authoriezed the Governor to make a transfer of property therein refered to the Confederate government, fo use during the war. The transfer has been made and the property is now in their possession...” Fine condition.
