Secessionist Autograph Letter Signed by Marshall Bell, 6pp. quarto, Statesville, North Caorlina, March 4, 1861, and reads in part: “...Iredell County gave a majority of 1,627 again a convention [for Secession], while the Southern candidates were put off with a vote barely large enough to recongnize the fact that they were in the field. It is certainly very humiliating to a person having the spirit of a man within him, that our county could vote as it did in face of the stubborn facts that are staring us in the face. To be bullied by a set of fanatical Black Republicans & then have their actions ratified by a Southern county in the hear of a Southern sttate are well calculated to smooth down the feathers of State pride....V.C. Barringer carried Cabarras for a convention and for State action. I am glad that his county has sustained him in his actions in our Senate. Wake has elected Lincoln candidates. So has Orange, Rowan, Yadkin and most counties generaly in which the Whig & Democratic parties were nearly equal. Democratic counties have as a general thing, gone against Lincoln, while Whig counties have in a mass shown a very palpable disposition to fraternize with the very national and patriotic Black Republicans of the North....There is very little idea that Mr. Lincoln will give him command of the expedition to relieve Major Anderson at Fort Sumter...but there is no telling to what lofty situation he will arrive at after a sufficient length of time...” Very good condition.
