War-date Confederate soldier’s Autograph Letter Signed by Captain John A. Mackey, 2nd Tennessee Infantry, 2pp. quarto, Camp Holmes, Virginia, October 16, 1861, and reads in part: “...I suppose you have heard of resurrecting batteries at this Point. We have got them finished & we have been firing from them for two days & have wounded two vessels very badly. This morning when day broke, we commenced fire upon a ship that was trying to pass our blockade. Several of our shells took effect in the side of the boat. Then the boat whistled for assistance & a Man of War slipped up to her & pulled her out to the Maryland shore & on yesterday we fired upon a boat as it was passing. The boat exchanged some 30 odd shots & finally slipped off, badly wounded & after that we fired upon a schooner which was loaded with provision & the second shot, the schooner hoisted a white flag & the men on board of her made their escape to Maryland by jumping into a little yawl boat that they had & running off leaving their schooner exposed to our battle fire of our battery. ... the Maury Missile’s Flag is now waving in triumph over our battery. No one was killed on our side & I cannot say whether we killed any or not. But I suppose we did as several of our balls went through the boats....” Fine condition.
