A great Confederate soldier's letter, 2pp. folio, by Pvt. James F. Cameron, [KIA Gettysburg, 7/2/63], Co. B, 11th Alabama Infantry, Manassas Junction, [Va.], Dec. 8, 1861, in part: "…I am yet guarding baggage…we are expecting big fight every day. From what we can learn of the enemy they are advancing. The Federal Congress has adjourned and has given General McClellan 17 days to attack us…and if they do not…he will be casured [cashiered] from his office. They had come out as far as Fairfax Court House. I think they will attack us in the course of a week…we have had some very cold weather…there are [more] soldiers getting sick than you every heard of…our regiment has to stand picket guard every 2 weeks. There are a great many complaining of the rheumatism and there are a great many got discharges…sum has sent home for substitutes…they has passed a law allowing soldiers to get substitutes in their place…I would give all I ever saw that awful force was stopped so that I could come home…and says I was a free bargain. I am sick and tired of this force. I sent $20 by John L. Jones. He got a discharge and went as far [as] Richmond and was taken sick…he he does come…you must go up to Pleasant Ridge and get…the money…I wish they would let me stay here all winter [and] guard baggage…the boys in camp are only allowed 7 blankets and 2 shirts, 1 pare of pants and a overcoat. They are expecting aright everyday. They want to be litely loaded [and] all the rest of there things sent back to this place…every one of the soldiers seem to be anxious for a fight. We have the greatest breast works you ever saw…if they will only make another attack and let our boys at them…it will settle the affair…J. F. Cameron." Most of Cameron's phonetic spelling has been corrected. Expected soiling and folds, else VG.
