A great early war-date Southern mother's letter, 2pp. 4to., written by Edward Kidder, Wilmington, [ N. C.], Mar. 9, 1861, to his namesake and college student son Edward Kidder, Jr. Edward was one of the few Southerners who did not leave Harvard College following the outbreak of the Civil War, reading, in part: "By the Schr. "Aid" we send you box & 2, 1 gal demijohns of wine…the returns are nearly all in & if the convention is carried it is by a small majority. The Union party have elected about 2 to 1 for Secession…if the convention is called we shall have a large Union majority. I do not think any more states will go out, certainly not if prudence governs Lincoln's course…the trouble may die out in a measure. The "Aid" is consigned to Silloway & Co. & when you see her arrival in Boston proper you can send in & get the things…E. Kidder." VG
