A great early war-date Southern mother's letter, 2pp. 8vo., written by "A. K.", [Anne (Potter) Kidder], Wilmington, [ N. C.], Apr. 23, 1861, to her college student son Edward Kidder. Edward was one of the few Southerners who did not leave Harvard College following the outbreak of the Civil War, reading, in part: "As…a vessel leaves here tomorrow for Boston I sent for the Capt. to come [and] take tea…that I can send these letters by him & tell him to try & see you. I do not know when I can have an opportunity to send…again. Young Laurence is still here & intends leaving in a vessel…my precious Eddie now you must strengthen yourself for what ever may be before you…I look to you for care over my two darlings. That must be your motive…to remain North…try & attend to your studies & pray for our country & ourselves…God only knows what is for the best. We must live near to God. He only can help us…may we meet agin on earth. If not may we meet in Heaven…A. K…".
