Andersonville Prison Camp Surgeon's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Asst. Surgeon Gustavus G. Roy [witness at Henry Wirz's criminal trial], Andersonville, Ga., April 13, 1865 to Army of Tennessee Medical Director and Andersonville Supervisor Samuel H. Stout, reading, in part: "On my arrival today from Fla…thither, I had been sent with a train of prisoners for exchange I heard that you were on the eve of transferring your Hd. Qrs. to Charlotte, N. C. It was my intention to visit you immediately upon my return from Fla., as I was unable to on my return from Vicksburg, but apprehending that you may have already started for N. C. I shall visit you at Columbus and Macon…I must beg you to excuse me for again suffocating your attention to my interest…I am out of your Department…the change has been a source of deep regret tom me. But even now, I can not feel but that the Prison Hospital here will be restored to your jurisdiction and even if such be not the case. I hope in [that] the Hospital & Post here are discontinued, I shall be ordered to report to you for assignment. In either event…I should prefer to remain on duty here, but if I cannot. I desire to have a situation in your department…as near Atlanta as possible where I expect to re-establish my family…should it be necessary for me to go to the field, I would prefer duty with the Army of Tenn. as I have a right to expect more consideration from Surgeon Pond then any other field Med. Director. Surgeon Clayton…would prefer a transfer to some post where he can educate his family…I would like to have charge of the Prison Hospital here, where all the energizes can…be directed to relieving the hospital, of the night, which now envelopes it in consequence of the misdeeds of others. I do not intend any aspersion of Surgeon C's administrations, nor would I have him removed unless his situation was bettered and the equal good of our cause subscribed…I have been informed that Surgeons White & Stevenson have both been relieved, in fact, Surgeon Gillard intimated to me that such…would be the result of his investigations and…he believed that the Hospitals here would be restored to your jurisdiction. I have expressed freely…my wishes…as a friend tho' it may be out of your power to assist me…do me the favor to write me so that i may meet you before you leave for N. C. Should we not met again, please accept my heart felt thanks for your many acts of disinterested kindness, tone & mind…sincerely [I am] wishing you the blessings of life and a speedy return to your loved ones at home, from where you have been so long separated, with whom you may be permitted to spend many long days…under a pure, free and independent government which you have made so many sacrifices to obtain…G. G. Roy." A fountain note reads: "Not for publication," else near fine.
