A good war-date Confederate soldier's letter, 4pp. 4to., written by Lt. Green D. Redwine, Co. I, 42nd North Carolina, Chaffins Bluff, Va., Dec. 3, 1864, in part: "…the health of the company is very good…our chief commanders are looking for a desperate attack on these lines soon…if we are not attacked soon…we will not have any fighting to do in this department…this winter…if the Yankees will let us alone we will be able to spend the winter quite comfortably. There was quite a display made here yesterday among our head officers. Several of them and several carriages with ladies from Richmond passed along our lines…while we were holding dress parade. They…attracted a great deal of attention as we seldom have the pleasure of letting our eyes feast upon a young lady…they are not furloughing any officers…on sick and wounded furloughs…Sisters you spoke of making me some jean pants…they will be very exceptable…I shall need them this winter for I do not wish to have my new goods and up to ware here in the diches…I was under the impression that times were very dull back there especially with the young ladies though it seems…that you all are having gay times under existing circumstances…hold up, don't give up the struggle try & enjoy yourselves are well as you can under the[se] terrible circumstances…[Father, Dec. 3]…I was very sorry indeed to hear of the death of Cousin W. R. Redwine. [Pvt. William R. Redwine 7th N. C. WIA Chancellorsville; POW North Anna, Va., 5/24/64; DOD Point Lookout Prison, MD, 10/19/64] I always thought a great deal of Roby. I and him have played and hunted a many day together. I have often times thought of him since he has been in the Yankee prisons. Poor fellow now he is gone to be seen no more on Earth. I hope he has gone to a better world than this, to a world where there is no cry of war nor roar of cannon or musketry…I sympathize with his bereaved father, mother & sisters…we are faring as well as can be expected under existing circumstances…G. D. Redwine." Minor soiling, else VG
