SMYTHE, Augustine (1842-1914), entered South Carolina College in 1860 but left during the Civil War. Joining the college corps of cadets as a corporal (25 January 1861), he was present at the firing on Fort Sumter on 12 April 1861; after the cadet corps was disbanded, he enlisted as a private in Company A (Washington Light Infantry) of the Twenty-fifth South Carolina Infantry (4 April 1862). In 1864, he was placed in charge of an experiment in which a captured balloon was used as an observation post and made several ascensions before the experiment was discontinued. Type Letter Signed "A.T. Smythe, 1pp., Charleston SC., July 18, 1888, on his professional letterhead, regarding scheduling a legal case.
