Lot of a dozen issues of Vanity Fair magazine from a partial volume, 1861. Billed as “The Household Journal” containing “The best Literature, Poetry, Music, Scientific Research, Wit and Humor, Gardening, Chess, Tales, Recipes, and other matters interesting to all intelligent readers.” Published weekly by Samuel Hazard Jr., in Philadelphia. Contains famous writers such as Artemus Ward (“On the Crisis” about secession); Fitz-Hugh Ludlow (author of “The Hasheesh Eater”), McArone (humor writer George Arnold), James Russell Lowell, Oliver Wendell Holmes, Bayard Taylor. Many great engravings. Each issue carries one full page engraving of a humorous or satiric nature. Verso of that page is blank to allow removal of art for framing. None, luckily have been removed, although the issues have all be removed from a volume without loss of pages. After June, the issues are heavy with Civil War-related content, mostly on the lighter side, biting satire or thought-provoking commentary or stirring verse.
