A politically charged pro-Lincoln letter, 2pp. legal size folio, written by a certain A. Horton, Bureau Co., [Illinois], Jan. 22, 1861, concerning his Uncle Dick's love of Douglas, in part: "….uncle Dick still worships Douglas and says that he (Douglas) is the best man to steer the ship of the nation that is now in the U. S. A., but I would rather trust F. D. if his outwards appearance aint so good. According to my judgement S. A. D. is the father of the dark storm cloud that is gathering in the South…that is] threatening the quiet of our country, but…Douglas Democrats, that is…[that] has any Democratic blood in their veins say Lincoln must be inaugurated and we think out here that the bluster is almost over…but if they persist in obstructing the free passage of the Mississippi the northwest will speak in thunder tones as they have never spoke before. The people here begins to feel quite Patriotic…A. Horton."
