Group of three (3) war-date Autograph Letter Signed by James S. Gray, Co. K, 1st D.C. Cavalry, who would die as a prisoner of war in the notorious Confederate death camp at Andersonville. Each with cover, there are 12 pages total, octavo, and read in part: “...[Camp at Bermuda Hundred, Va. June 1, 1864] We are about twelve miles from Richmond. We have some music down round here this morning. About three o’clock they went to firing with their artillery, and they kept up a devil of a firing for about an hour or a little more....the Rebels are getting desperate, and they say themselves that they can’t hold out much longer....[Camp at Bermuda Hundred, Va June 12, 1864] we ewas enlisted to do patrol duty in the District of Columbia, and now we are down here within twelve miles of Richmond, bu the story is that Governor Coney of our state has been on to Washington to see about it and has given them until the first of July to take us back to Washington...the Governor of our state is making a hell of a row about it...Once in a while there will be some heavy cannonading on the right and left of us, but as yet nothing has trouble us. We have not heard a great deal about Gen. Grant for a few days, but I expect that he is advancing on towards Richmond. The six Companies that is mounted went out on a raid last Wednesday night and got back the next night about one o’clock. They went up to Petersburg and cut around the edges of the city and had a little brush with the Rebs and drove them out of their line of breastworks and captured one field piece, a brass one, and a lot of horses and mules, and thirty-four prisoners and brought them to camp...They was very lucky not to get cut up no worse for they had to fight against artillery, but them little sixteen shooters did the work for them. The Rebs could not stand them no how...[Camp at Bermuda Hundred, Va, June 20, 1864] I had my pick out of the company horses, and if I have not got a good horse, there is not one in the Company. He is about the color of little Tiger...and he has got four good legs under him and can run like the very devil....” More. All fine condition.
