A great Civil War Union veteran's memorial fund document, 1p. folio, ca. summer 1893, being an accounting by Brevet Major John A. Fox, 2nd Massachusetts Vols. for the erection and placement of that regiment's monument upon the Cedar Mountain Battlefield. At Cedar Mountain the 2nd lost over 250 men in killed, wounded and missing. Their record there would be the envy of any veteran who wanted to claim a place in Fox's "Fighting Three Hundred" Civil War reference record. In all, Fox collected $247.00 for that purpose with donors including former Massachusetts Governor George L. Andrew at $10.00 while abolitionist and Col. Henry L. Higginson gave $25.00. The document shows that Fox paid Murdock Granite Company $64.50 for the monument's bronze tablet and nearly $40.00 in order to get the monument to the Culpeper. In all, Fox cashed out $247.00 for the creation, freight and erection of the Cedar Mountain monument. Near fine
