A historic war-date Union officer's letter, 8pp. 8vo., written by 2nd Lt. Ira F. Gensel, 4th United States Regular Infantry, [MWIA Fredericksburg, Va., 12/13/62 died 12/28/62], "Washington City, Feb. 2, 1862", in part: "…while on guard at the "Old Capitol Prison"…my application was returned marked "not approved"…you will see my duties have ben changed…I now command the guard at the "Old Capitol Prison" where the Rebel prisoners are confined. I have Mrs. Greenhow & Mrs. Baxley under my care, both Secesh prisoners. You have often read of them in the papers. When I am there I have little Rose about 7 years of age in my room. She is allowed to be with her mother for company. She is very pretty and smart & she is going to make me a Secesh badge. [I] will send it to you for safekeeping. If I can get permission I will get her likeness taken and will send you one…the 4th is to remain in the city and guard the prison which is too responsible to trust to volunteers…Ira F. Gensel." The original stamped transmittal cover is included. Minor toning, else VG.
