A great war-date Union officer's letter, 3pp. 4to., written by 2nd Lt. Ira F. Gensel, 4th United States Regular Infantry, [MWIA Fredericksburg, Va., 12/13/62 died 12/28/62], "Camp near Sharpsburg, M.d., Oct. 3, 1862," in part: "…still at Antietam. Yes, annie still at Antietam…when will we leave…I don't know…the relief or change in the monotony of camp life…was a review of our division by Uncle Abe. He was accompanied by the "pride of the Army Little Mac", also his staff and body-guard. The day was most beautiful and the review…a grand affair. The men looked very well considering the exposure and hardships they have undergone during the campaign. Reviews as a general things are despised…in the army but both officers and men for…they are usually attended with delays…the men are hurried out to the review ground aery in the morning and then kept waiting until near night for the reviewing officer to arrive…I was…glad to see the president and think the men were also. His frequent visits look a though he cared for and took some interest in those who are fighting the battles of the Nation. He looks about the same as he did last winter when I used to see him at the receptions at the White House, perhaps a little more care worn…let me repeat again Annie. Never be uneasy about me until you hear something and have good reason for it…Ira. The original stamped transmittal cover is included. Minor toning, else VG.
