A good war-date Union soldier's letter, 7pp. 8vo., written, both sheets on patriotic stationery, by Pvt. Moses F. Whittemore, Co. C, 51st Ohio Vols., Nashville, Tenn., Mar. 8, 1862, in part: "…marched from camp…for West Point on the Ohio river…we got onboard the John Raine…to Paducah at the mouth of [the] Tennessee river…got orders to go to Nashville the capitol of Tenn….we are now in Nashville guarding the city…after marching 3 days the boys were glad to get aboard the boat…we are well acquainted with steam boat riding…while passing up the Cumberland…we passed the battle ground of Fort Donelson…we had full details of the battle there. The people that came to the bank to se us pass…showed…that they had been tainted with Secession. The men would wave their hats but not until we told them to[o.] They waved them through [?] of us at Clarksville…we saw the rebel fort which they had left about 4 days before…they even left their cannon and other munitions…about 4 miles below Nashville we saw a number of cannon which had been thrown down [into] the river bank by the Rebels. Our Brigade was the first that entered Nashville. The citizens offered no resistance…when the regt. or brigade…had got farther into the city Gen. Nelson ascended to the roof of the state house and…planted the Stars and stripes…their they shall waves until Secession is no more. A majority of the people in the city are Secesh, but it is guarded by our regt. Our Col. is Provost Marshall of the city…direct…Co. G, 51st O. regt., Nashville, Tenn."
