A good war-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 4to., written, on patriotic stationery, by Corp. Moses F. Whittemore, Co. C, 51st Ohio Vols., Murfreesboro, Tenn., July 17, 1863, in part: "…John Morgan's army had invaded Ohio…he was invited by Vallandigham to pay Ohio a visit…he's accepted the invitation. While Val. was at the capital of his master Jeff's Confederacy he had an interview with John and told him (John) that he thought it would be good policy to invade O. & Indiana for he says the Cooperheads are ready to join you at your coming…that he would capture a great many horses, cattle which he could take to the South…no doubt…he will get a great many recruits…he will capture hundreds of horses & cattle, but he will never cross the Ohio rive. with them…he may go through to the Lake and should he see fit go by the way of Coshocton. I hope that you will not fail to give him a warm reception with your rifles. Don't flatter yourself any longer with the idea that the rebels will not invade the North…it would be good policy for the citizens of O. & I. to arm themselves and prepare for the coming struggle. It would not be very strange if ere two months the citizens of Coshocton Co. would have the pleasure of seeing their barns and dwelling houses in ashes and their farms occupied for camps…who thought of the invasion of Pennsylvania two months before it took place? No one. Just so sudden may your own dear homes be attacked. Yes, my dear friends, the war is no longer to be confined within the limits of the South…Pennsylvania, Ohio and Indiana may feel its awful realities…an invasion of Ohio and Indiana would be the best thing that could happen to them…their would not be quite so many to sympathize with them….they would be more inclined to take up arms in defense of their property…but…I would be very sorry to hear of he invasion of the North had commenced…to here of the destruction of the lives and property of the loyal citizens of the North; but nothing would please me better than to see the property of every sympathizer destroyed and he himself cast into some filthy prison…". Unsigned. Also included is a, 2pp. 8vo., letter, reading, in part: "…. from Cincinnati this record or roll which I thought I would send home for preservation…the portrait in the right upper corner is Stephen A. Douglas…below him Gen. Butler. The scene in the left lower corner represents the son about to leave his parents for the war…the mother holds on to the son… while the father hands him the musket and tells him to go…the center portrait is President Lincoln…the scene just below the eagle represents industry, prosperity & civilization…Moses."
