A great letter written by the wife of a Union soldier who became "a rank abolitionist" since he had enlisted and served several months in Louisiana. Lydia Fowler writes, 6pp. 8vo., from Springfield, New Hampshire to her brother Corp. Moses F. Whittemore, Co. C, 51st Ohio Vols., concerning husband's change in opinion towards slavery after enlisting, writing, in part: "…now I will tell you about Horatio [B. Fowler, Co. F, 15th New Hampshire] well…I talked to the Gov. [and he ] got a discharge from the Adjutant Gen. He came home…in Sept. Horatio enlisted again in a nine months Reg. He is now on Carollton, Louisiana…since he has been out there that he is a rank abolitionist which he never was before…he believes the cause is a good [one] and if the rebus should finally get the victory and our Government falls it will be through Northern traitors. He asks his friends to pray for him…is thankful he has parents to care and pray for him…but says…if I never return pray that I may be prepared and I will pray for myself…there has [been] 15 within one mile of this house [who have] gone to war. All the Robie boys, David Luce [11th New Hampshire, WIA Spotsylvania C. H., 5/12/64], Uncle George Stevens [aged 43, 11the New Hampshire], John [11the New Hampshire, WIA Fredericksburg, Va., 12/13/62] and Kimball [11the New Hampshire WIA Battle of the Crater, 7/30/64 and then deserted Webster Hospital, Manchester, N. H., 3/19/65] Rollins…Horatio, William and Clinton Fowler [all 11the New Hampshire]…old Clough's two sons went into the army last fall, the younger [Francis S. Cough, 14th New Hampshire, DOD 3/12/63 at Poolesville, MD] was brought home dead three weeks ago. [He] died with the mumps…Lydia S. Fowler. Also included is a, 4pp. 8vo., letter, written by Lydia mentioning Horatio's return from war and the ill health he was in upon his return. Both minor soiling, else VG
