A great war-date Union soldier's letter, 3pp. 8vo., written on Columbia patriotic stationery, by Pvt. Robert A. Hubbel, Co. K, 14th New York State Vols., [n. p., but Miner's Hill, Va.], Oct. 22, 1861, reading, in part: "…were called up for the purpose of marching…have not yet marched. It rained very hard…we will find some trouble as they have just defeated our army…at Leesburg and killed one of our generals [Col. Edward Baker] which will inspire them with era confidence. Our Colonel [James McQuade] is sick and gone to the hospital. We are not satisfied with his sickness…we think he is playing it as he did not look sick and was not until yesterday…things look to me as if he was afraid and I am sure Capt. [William H.] Seymour is from the way he acted when we went to Munson's Hill, but our major [Charles H. Young, resigned 11/25/61] is man enough to make up for both…i…do not feel that General McClellan will be precipitate in his movements but an action soon is inevitable unless they retreat. I was at Falls Church…and saw the graves of some of the S. C., Tenn., Ala., & Georgia Vol. They were buried in the churchyard . The church was [?] built before the revolution and is in good preservation yet…Miner's Hill. I do not know what they call it…for it is most level place I have seen in Va…R. A. Hubbel…".
