A great war-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Robert A. Hubbel, Co. K, 14th New York State Vols., Miner's Hill, [Va.], Nov. 10, 1861, reading, in part: "…I have just got back from picket and a tough time we had as the nights are very cold and fires are not allowed…we A & K were called out by a discharge of rifles. [We] run to our reserve posts which was a little back of the others and their laid for about 1/2 hour…when the firing again commenced…the word rally to posts was again given and we were turned out and stayed laying on the wet ground…for about 1 hour…to give you an understanding of our present picket position I will figure it…in this style [here he draws a detailed map of their picket position in relation to Miner's Hill]…the firing was done on their side by their scouts as you can not see anyone. It is dark and they and we are in the woods. Yesterday…we were reviewed with our division by Gen. McClellan. It rained very hard all the time and we all got wet through and had a nasty time generally. We fired and had a sham fight…we divide off and arrange in line of battle and then orders are given and maneuvers are made as though they were trying to beat us in flanking and firing, rather busy time in the rain…we are drilled 3 to 5 times per day and are fed well…R. A. Hubbel." Light soiling, else VG
