A great war-date Union soldier's letter, 3pp. 4to., written by Pvt. Robert A. Hubbel, Co. K, 14th New York State Vols., "4 to 6 miles from White House on Pamunkey River or within 18 miles of Richmond, May 20, 1862," reading, in part: "…[Gen. Fitz John] Porter is commanding a separate Corps and our Brig. General is in command of the division. Col. McQuade commands the brigade and our former Lieut. Col. is now Col. of our Regt. Col. Skilling [Charles H. Skillin KIA Gaines Mills, Va., 6/27/62]is his name. Our former adjutant is asst. Adjt. Genl. under Brig. Gen. McQuade and Lieut. [Robert H.] Foote of our company is adjutant of our Regt. The change brings us in the same corps as…the Regulars of Sykes' Reserve infantry and also with Duryea's Zouaves. Yesterday we came from a place called White House on…a small…steamer….we move again…toward Richmond there to fight if we can find anybody to fight. Deserters and negroes come in all the time so much so that we hardly notice them…our cavalry are near Richmond…they will make a stand there…a contraband acme in saying they had left Richmond and…Union men had raised the Union flag…we have had it taken and cheered for a dozen times before…Bottoms Bridge…is ours at last…our gun boats can now rum up very near the city…our Regt is reducing very fast by sickness…we today can not get in for a fight…more than 650 men…our position in the right of the division has subjected us to many fatigues…such as skirmishing, picketing etc. It is al very nice for the generals but hard for the men…we are now changed to the reserve which is always given to…the best troops and are put with Regulars, more discipline and less work…a station here with a name but I can not think of it now…Robert A. Hubbel." Light soiling and wrinkles, else VG
