A great war-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Corp. Robert A. Hubbel, Co. K, 14th New York State Vols., Harrison's Landing, Va., July 12, 1862, reading, in part: "…we are encamped in a woods about one mile from the landing. We are destitute of tents…except such as the woods afford…our Regt lost in last battles more than at first supposed. The whole number of killed, wounded and missing was 224…the casualties of Co. K 2 killed 1st Sergeant Abner P. Morton and Orlando Bell. 15 wounded Sergt. Lewis, Harrison Dingman…[many more names]…Wm. Spencer also taken prisoner…also Lieut. Butler who was wounded in [the] foot and taken back to a hospital but our men being driven back many could not get away…there was not ambulances enough to carry them off…our Doctor Churchill stayed back with our wounded. Wm. Spencer was wounded in the leg and taken back to the same place as also Frank Chase (corporal) of the color guard. Both were taken prisoners. I think they will be taken care of…they, it is said, treat our wounded as well as we treat theirs…our troops are about 4 or 5 miles from the landing where…we are fortifying quite extensively…we will [not] be bothered very much by the Rebels along the line of the James River…they bring down…small field pieces and fire into our transports and unless our gun boats are right on hand we are in a bad fix. They run down and fire and then run back……when our boats come down…give them one volley and then run back out of reach of the gun boats. In this manner they can do a great deal of damage…we are still short handed and need more men…if you could only have seen the great quantity of troops they had you would certainly think as I do. I was utterly impossible to thin their ranks as they would immediately fill up with fresh troops…Capt. Seymour is all right an one of the bravest men I ever saw…R. A. Hubbel." Minor spotting and soiling, else VG
