A great war-date Union soldier's letter, 3 1/2pp. 4to., written by Corp. Robert A. Hubbel, Co. K, 14th New York State Vols., Harrison's Landing, Va., July 30, 1862, reading, in part: "…yesterday…several of the gunboats went up the James River in line of battle…it is reported that we (our division) are going to Edwards Ferry…to reinforce Pope…also…we are going to…relieve a division that is there now building fortifications and doing picket duty…last night another attempt was made to fire the shipping in the harbor which proved quite disastrous to those engaged in it…when they caught them…as per orders shot or drowned every one. They came over from the other shore in a small boat. 6 of them intending to set on fire a schooner loaded with hay and oats. They had their oars muffled and boat filled half way with water so as to sink it and prevent noise. Firing has been heard in the direction of Fort Darling today…the balloon went down the river on a boat when up so as to discover if there were any batteries being erected along the…river. It is said [Stonewall] Jackson is after Pope with 95,000 men well armed and equipped. If so he will give him a dusty turn. Pope…needs more troops if he expects to hold his position…our old doctor that was taken prisoner at Gaines Mill has returned from Richmond and makes many reports…says that Billy Spencer died at Savage Station of typhoid fever that he (doctor) dressed his wound several times. He was buried there in a pit with several others. You will please not say anything to Spencer's folks about it yet as Capt. Seymour wished none of the men to write home about it. A young man by the name of Hoise [Sergt. Theodore Hoes 44th New York also WIA 5/15/64 and promoted 1st Lieut.]…belongs to the 44th N. Y. V. and was wounded at Hanover Court House in the hand…[is] all right and ready for another fight which…we will get before long…R. A. Hubbel…". Light soiling, else VG
