K, 14th New York State Vols., "Camp near Falmouth Station near Fredericksburg on the Rappahannock River, [Va.], Aug. 21, 1862," reading, in part: "We left Harrison's Landing last Thursday night…laid on our arms until…daylight…the 1st day we got across the Chickahominy…by the way we came…through Williamsburgh and going 2 miles beyond where the old fortifications are that were used by the Rebels…the same old general could be seen and heard with the words…'fall in 14th'…to the great annoyance of those sleeping too soundly to hear the bugle…we fell, in stumbled in…and again…'forward file, right, march'…we were led to Newport News where we were shipped on board the…John Warner…at Acquia Creek…we were crowded aboard the cars…Burnside's forces are here …Pope is sone where around here but can not tell where…those in high authority know what is up, certain…action is at hand…without the aid of reinforcements…we can again get the upper hand of the Rebellion. Our troops are a worn out lot of troops…all the men are crippled with sore feet and swollen limbs…the stragglers are continually coming in…but will be picked up by the rear guard and shoved forward…[Aug. 26th, Ellis Ford, Rappahannock River]…we marched that night..arrived here in the morning about 20 miles from Fredericksburg and are guarding this ford…lay ready to move either forward or back at a moments notice. I hear that Pope has been driven back…R. A. Hubbel…". Minor soiling, else VG
