A great war-date Union soldier's letter, 2pp. folio, written by Corp. Robert A. Hubbel, Co. K, 14th New York State Vols.,"Camp near Fredericksburg, Va., Nov. 27, 1862," reading, in part: "…only at stated periods can we get the chance to write and often then we have to borrow materials for so doing. Although father has always sent envelopes and paper I have no way of carrying them except in my pockets…they often get wet and soiled…Thanksgiving [is] the day of all others when our thoughts are turned upon a good dinner…the soldiers (at least our corps) have never since my enlistment been so short of rations, in fact, I have nothing but a cup of coffee for supper…the same for breakfast…for dinner & supper today…we will have the same…other regiments come here and offer money and in fact anything…for a few hard bread or as we call it hard tack. The army never was so short as at present…it can not last long and certainly it must not…we already begin to hear of regiments that have rallied on the quartermasters and taken all they could find …they are not to blame…Burnside had given the Rebels at Fredericksburg a certain time to evacuate. They however have not done so and we…have not made any movement to force them to…Robert A. Hubbel." Minor soiling, else VG
