A great war-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Corp. Robert A. Hubbel, Co. K, 14th New York State Vols.,"Camp near Falmouth, Va., Feb. 1, 1863," reading, in part: "…the most dreary and lonesome part of a soldier's life is when shut in by…rain, rain, rain. Mud, mud is all you…hear or see. Teams that usually are drawn by 4 mules have now 8 to 10 and even that with light loads are often stuck in the mud…the mules literally drown and have to be left on the roadside…i certainly hope we may be discharged as a Regt…so that I may once more become disentangled from the grasp of the military paw..I am becoming heartily tired of this. Not that I have no…desire to see our country freed from civil war and traitors made to suffer, but the seeming lack of energy on the part of those in high places and the seeming want of a desire on the part of our generals to wipe out this dark spot in our history. Could the Army of the Potomac have…embraced…the spirit of "76"…nothing could impede their onward march, but broils among our leaders and court maritals constantly in session are not…means of giving confidence and courage to an army constantly led to battle…be repulsed and then inquiry is made…some part of the…machine has failed to work. Burnside has been superseded by "Joe Hooker" or "Fighting Joe" as he is called…I think he will be more careful and I hope more successful than his predecessors. He will fight like a tiger…but will be careful…I for one have taken a liking to him. He was our Corps commander and have seen him often. He is a plain old country…man…he don't put on airs as others…our Brigadier General [Charles Griffin] is a sort of a "don't care a damn" man…Rogers is at home yet…I heard he had a discharge. Well between you and me he is a [??] If you could hear the remarks passed on all them "damn" rear guard fellows at home. You could say they had better have staid here and done their duty. Lots of soldiers are loafing around up there that are…great big cowards to face the music…Robert." Minor soiling, else VG
