A great war-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Corp. Robert A. Hubbel, Co. K, 14th New York State Vols.,"Camp near Falmouth, Va., Feb. 8, 1863," reading, in part: "…you ask me to be careful before again binding myself for another term. It is with me as with all I hear…who…may be offered…another year if [they] could get a brigadier's commission…I would not hesitate one second in taking the discharge…it is the general feeling. You say many have received commissions after arriving home. In the first place what are they doing home…you say they were sick. Yes, we know about their sickness and we also know who they are…father we know them. The men who have come home and got commissions are some of…the very poorest soldiers in the ranks…for instance Robert Lathrop of Stockport…was the biggest blockhead in Co. K, understood the manual of arms the least…yet he come and procured adjutant in the 159th N. Y. V.. Why? because he had money and friends who got it for him and he is fool enough not to see that he will make an ass of himself. [Within two months Lathrop would be killed in action at Irish Bend, La., on April 14, 1863.] As he was always sure to do here even when corporal of the gad at guard mount. We seldom…would put him in the front for fear he would make mistakes and spoil the drill. Lewis was a good fellow but had no merit as a soldier…he never would have got any higher…even if he had…stayed…where is [Henry] Rogers [DD 11/23/62], [Harrison] Dingman, Schermerhow [Charles Schoenn?] and a host of others that are away from the company. Are they really disabled…our worse time has been since they left…Rogers never went on picket, but once at Yorktown…I suppose he would from his talk make all think he knew lots about war…I hear…that he makes quite a splurge…the 9th Corps is being embarked for…Suffolk. Our is the 5th Army Corps. It is said we are to move…R. A. Hubbel. Very light soiling, else VG
