A great war-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Corp. Robert A. Hubbel, Co. K, 14th New York State Vols.,"Camp near Falmouth, Va., Mar. 1, 1863," reading, in part: "…the Regt is in high spirits in anticipation of the expiration of their time. Hardly anything else is talked of. Do you think the draft will take place…or will they again make a fool of it and wait until so many terms are out. There are some 300,000 men, 9 month and 2 year men whose time will expire within the next 4 months…that will leave a great vacancy to be filled…it will…become necessary to draft as volunteering is played out. The only volunteering…will be to about face for Canada…as for old soldiers reenlisting that is also played out…these men will be got only by drafting…a detail of 200 out of the Regts in our Brigade have been out on fatigue near the U. S. Ford, Rappahannock River…we stayed near 2 weeks and a very stormy time we had of it…all that were out caught quite severe colds…we were detailed for 5 days…after getting us out there kept us 2 weeks with no change of clothes…at work in rain and snow…it seemed to storm for our special benefit..I am over it and don't care what comes. I always tried to do my duty and always will as long as I am in the service…P. S…if you wish to send a box of eatables send it…if you wish to send any liquor which…must be good Brandy…pack [it] at the bottom of the box as boxes are opened by the provost…R. A. Hubbel."
