PIERPOINT, Francis Harrison (1814-1899) called the "Father of West Virginia," was an American lawyer, politician, and Governor of the Union-controlled parts of Virginia during the Civil War. After the war, he was the Governor of all of Virginia during the early years of Reconstruction. War-date Letter Signed “F.H Pierpoint” as Governor of Union-Occupied Virginia, 1pp. quarto, on The Commonwealth of Virginia letterhead, Wheeling, Virginia, February 25, 1862, addressed to Secretary of War Stanton and reads in part: “...Samuel Clark of Harrison...was engaged in assisting the Quarter Master of Genl. Morris in getting forage and as a guide in Randolph County and on the 31st day of July 1862 was taken prisoner by the Confederates at Big Spring...I enclose you resolutions passed by the General Assembly of Virginia in regard to the person therein named. I hope in the exchange of prisoners, these men will be remembered....” Fine condition.
