A great war-date Ohio Squirrel Hunter's letter, 4pp. 8vo., on patriotic stationery, by Volunteer Militiaman J. W. Griffith, Youngsville, Adams Co., Ohio, July 27, 1862, reading, in part: "…there is a great excitement here…the news came here that Old John Morgan was marching onto Ripley with a large army of rebels and wanted all to come and protect Ripley…there was about 20 or 25 from here went. Our captain was McAvery from North Liberty. When we got to Ripley Sunday…about three o'clock in the morning. In the evening came a dispatch for us to go to Maneray, Ky., [Monterey, KY?] that they expected a battle. We crossed the river and went out there Sunday night. On Monday evening we returned home without the loss of one man. Father went to Ripley [paper loss] went to Maneray. J. W. Griffith." Minor rodent paper loss on lower left corner, else VG
