A great pair of war-date draft letters, totaling 8pp., 8vo., written by future 1st Lt. William H. Thurston of Battery F (Ricketts), 1st Penn. Light Artillery, Sunbury, Pa., March 20, 1862 to his cousin concerning the battle of Hampton Roads and other war news, in small part: "…[I] sincerely hope that you may succeed in winning the confidence and good opinion of Brig. Gen. Hatch…when the Monitor and Merrimac fought…there was quite a stir. I have not heard the people converse on any subject excepting the Ironclad monster, they call it the "Infernal machine" which (in my opinion) is a proper name for the Merrimac. Some have that this war would terminate this springbok I fear that people are judging too hastily…may God bless all those that have gone to fight our country's battles…". Both unsigned. Light toning, else VG
