War-date Union soldier's letter, 5 1/4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Solomon B. Clark [MWIA Fair Oaks, Va., May 31, 1862], Co. I, 34th New York Vols, in part: "…our company are on picket now and will be relieved tomorrow…we are on two hours and off four during the twenty four…there is not much chance for sleep or rest…we have to be at the guard house ready for anything that may happens, patrols, grand rounds or what not…Dr. [Socrates N.] Sherman…is here today and Co. K Capt. [John] Beverly presented him with a beautiful sword, belt & sash the whole costing $120 in token of their appreciation of him as a man and for his kindness in franking their letters etc. The Dr. accepted their gift with a nice little speech…Co. I presented him with a gold headed cane sometime ago. The Capt. bought and gave it to him in Washington. You have undoubtedly heard of Gen. Stone's arrest and that he is now confined is Fort Lafayette. That very thing has made the troops under his command feel as glad as though they had won a battle. It is certainly the best thing that could have been done…Gen. [Willis A.] Gorman is in his place and Col. [William] La Deu is acting in Gen. Gorman's place he having returned from New York last week. His eyes are some better. Col. [Napoleon B.] Dana of the 1st Minn[esota] is promoted to brigadier Gen. but has not his brigade yet. The war news for two or three days past have been very cheering. Sue says Cynes was in the battle at Fort Henry. The Burnside Expedition has done nobly…Fort Donelson was taken with 5000 prisoners…Gorman since Stone's arrest has been shelling the forts opposite here covering Leesburg…he will certainly do something and not let the enemy build fortifications under his guns if he can help it…Sol. B. Clark." VG
