Union soldier's war-date letter, 1p. folio, written by Pvt. Samuel H. Smith, Co. E, 32nd Illinois Vols., [deserted at the end of the war on 7/22/65] "Camp near Corinth, Miss., June 8, 1862, concerning the burial of his brother following his death at Shiloh, in part: "…in reply to your…reference to the burial of Wm. I can only say that we done it as well as the nature of the case would admit. We put a wood head board so that we could find the grave in case that we should ever want to take him home, but such a thing is impossible at present and for some time to come…we are on our way to Memphis. We do not apprehend any engagement without he enemy…Samuel H. Smith…". His brother William is now buried in Shiloh National Cemetery Grave No. 1550. Folds splits, else VG.
